Anita Blake Wiki

The Dragon is a enigmatic female member of the Vampire Council. She is an old vampire, having created Primo in ancient Roman times and seems to have been one of the original vampires, or at least one of the original bloodlines of Vampires. The Father of the Day stated that all vampires descended either from him, Marmee Noir, Belle Morte, or the Dragon.

She has the power to draw all of the energy from another vampire, killing it permanently. Like Belle Morte and Morvoren, the Dragon feeds on emotion; specially anger and violence. Also like Belle and Morvoren, the Dragon can project her power, and did so in an attempt to force Anita to feed on Jean-Claude's vampires.

In Blue Moon, Damian states that the Dragon had formerly sired many vampires, but has remained largely secluded during recent centuries.[1]

In Incubus Dreams, the Dragon sent Primo to St. Louis in an attempt to dethrone or destabilize Jean-Claude. The Dragon influences Primo from a distance, and from this brief encounter, Anita gains her ability to feed on anger. Once Jean-Claude and Anita overcame Primo, the Dragon permitted Primo to remain as their servant and expressed a desire to discuss "council business" with them.[2]

In Skin Trade, the Dragon is mentioned briefly as having many vampires descended from her. The subject of the quote is unclear, but Vittorio is possibly referring to the Dragon when he says that "she was never human to begin with."[3]

In Bullet, Belle Morte informs Jean-Claude that American vampires petitioned the council to kill him out of fear, but the Dragon, the Traveller, and Belle voted in Jean-Claude's favor. It is revealed that the Dragon along with the rest of the Council have taken the power of Marmee Noir into themselves, opening a way for the Mother of Darkness to posses them all, but Marmee Noir could not actively posses her. Marmee Noir informs Jean-Claude and Anita that "the Dragon feels nothing for [them], except curiosity."[4] The Dragon sends some vampires from her bloodline to St. Louis just in case she becomes possessed. Those vampires would allow Anita to free her from the Mother of Darkness just as Anita did for Belle Morte and Padma.[5]

In Crimson Death, the Dragon is mentioned briefly as being a sourde de sang for centuries.[6]

The Dragon has the power "to eat the essence of the dead and make the undead, really, truly dead." Anita finds it "eerily similar" to Jean-Claude feeding the ardeur with a kiss.[7]

She can feed on anger, which is a power Anita permanently takes on. The Dragon can also use a vampire's own aura against them to cut them, which Anita is able to use occasionally in high stress situations.[8]

The Dragon's line has the ability to create Brides, which is a rare ability and only shows up in the lines descended from the Father of the Day, including the Dragon's and Belle Morte's lines.[9]

The Father of the Day describing Belle Morte, Marmee Noir, and the Dragon: "Belle Morte's line has powers that neither she, nor I, possessed. Belle was something new. All the others descend from us, but her and the Dragon. She was never human to begin with, so she was always different from us."[10]

  • The golden tigers trained to be ready for a new master of tigers; to prepare for the Dragon's line, they trained in combat.[11]

  1. Blue Moon, chapter 41: "The Council decides which of them will send their vampires out to make more. For thousands of years, it was the Queen of Nightmares, our leader; or Morte d’ Amour, the lover of death, and the Dragon; but they grew tired of the games and retreated inside the council chambers. You rarely see them."
  2. Incubus Dreams, chapter 82: "The Dragon has given Primo permission to stay in St. Louis and would like to talk to us at a later date about council business."
  3. Skin Trade, chapter 68: "Belle Morte's line has powers that neither she, nor I, possessed. Belle was something new. All the others descend from us, but her and the Dragon. She was never human to begin with, so she was always different from us."
  4. Bullet, chapter 12.
  5. Bullet, chapter 48: "... the Dragon and the Traveller are sending people of their line to St. Louis, so if the Mother does try to take them over we can have a leg up on breaking them free."
  6. Crimson Death, chapter : "[Moroven] holds absolute sway over the vampires in Ireland, because they can only rise through her bite, her line. She is her own sourdre de sang, fountain of blood, just as Jean-Claude has become, as Belle Morte and the Dragon have been for centuries. Only her power has been great enough to overcome the reluctance of the land to give up its dead."
  7. Incubus Dreams, chapter 38.
  8. Bullet, chapter 32: "Dragon barely touched you from a distance and you can feed on anger. I heard you even did her nifty trick of using the vampire’s own aura against them to cut like glass."
  9. Bullet, chapter 34: "Do you know much about this whole Bride phenomenon?" / "I’ve seen it. It’s really rare. It only shows up in bloodlines descended from the Father of the Day, like Belle Morte or the Dragon."
  10. Skin Trade, chapter 68.
  11. Bullet, chapter 39.
