Suelita is Rafael's ex-lover and mother of Hector. We hear about her in Rafael.

History within series[]

Suelita is one of the 'sexy, crazy, unstable women' that Rafael used to date before giving up on the whole thing as a lost cause, although Suelita never hurt him. She was still a human at the time, and if this status has changed afterwards it's not mentioned. According to Benito, who keeps track of the women that he thinks might cause problems, Suelita loves power and status and wanted to be Rafael's queen, and has never forgiven him for not marrying her. She became pregnant with Hector right around the time her relationship with Rafael ended, but married someone else, which Benito took to mean that she didn't believe that the child was Rafael's or she would have offered a paternity test. She is still married to the same man.

After Hector challenged Rafael, but before the beginning of the novel, Suelita called him to beg for her son's life. She claimed that Hector is actually Rafael's son, and pleaded Rafael to ask for the fight to be to third blood instead of to death. She said she didn't tell Rafael earlier because she didn't love him and didn't want to trap him in a loveless marriage. Benito finds this highly unlikely, but Rafael believed her, and likewise didn't question her claim that she doesn't want to tell Hector because her husband is the only father Hector has ever known and she wants to keep it that way.

Rafael made the offer as requested and Hector unsurprisingly turned it down, and the act of offering made Rafal seem weak and undermined his position among the rodere. Moreover it left Rafael facing a young, promising wererat whom he now believes to be his son, which eats at Rafael's will to win. That can easily turn lethal in a fight, which may or may not been what Suelita was after all along. Rafael really wants to believe her, and when he finally has to tell other people about the phone call he doesn't take it well when it's pointed out to him that whether she was telling the truth about Hector's paternity or not, at the end of the day she wants Hector to win and to take Rafael's throne over his dead body.
